台中市51歲王姓國小女老師教書20多年，因罹患牙周病，導致牙齦萎縮，牙縫大、向外暴出，不敢露齒笑，平時總板著一張臉，學生也不敢太親近，直到經親友勸說後，向牙醫求診，解決齒齦膿腫、牙齒鬆脫等問題，才恢復自信，終於趕上畢業典禮可以笑臉迎人，學生發現老師變了，爭相合影。
廖明德說明，女老師因罹患牙周病，兩顆門牙齒縫大、牙齦萎縮、上排牙齒長短不一，對自己一口爛牙顯得沒自信，不僅不愛笑，開口講話時，外貌也顯得比同齡人蒼老許多，雖然教學認真，但學生們平時看到老師都選擇「快閃長崎蛋糕」，親友們實在看不下去，半推半就下才願意就醫。
廖明德指出，女老師接受牙周再生手術治療，評估後施行牙齦翻瓣術，將不健康的牙齦或牙周組織分離，再從齦溝內清除牙結石、斑狀物和發炎的芽肉組織，徹底清洗滅菌後，再將牙周再生材料，如人工骨粉填補於暴露的牙根表面，誘發齒槽骨成形，促進特定軟、硬組織再生功能，讓患者重拾自信笑容。
